The Get Pregnant Diet

8 April 2008

Since we’ve been trying to have a baby I’ve been in pretty good shape, and I’ve been in really bad shape.  I’m a yo-yo dieter for sure.  Because I didn’t get pregnant while in either state, I’m not prone to believing that an extra 30 lbs will make a big difference one way or another.  That’s my opinion as it applies to me.  Your mileage may vary.

That said, I do believe that when I’m not eating right, I’m not feeling right - mentally or physically.  If I’m eating lots of sugar and carbs, and my blood sugar is bouncing all over the place I would expect any half-intelligent embryo (and let’s face it - I expect to bear geniuses) to take a pass on parking in my lot.  So, I’ve decided it’s time to modify my diet.  For the time being I’m going to focus on quality of food rather then quantity.  I’m cutting out caffeine, processed sugar, most high carb foods, and many processed foods.  I’m going to increase my protein intake, and work to maintain healthy blood sugar levels with fruit, vegetables, chicken and fish.  Historically I’ve found that regular infusions of protein throughout the day (chicken, shakes, protein bars) really keep my hunger under control.

If we do get pregnant, I can’t imagine eating foods that would do anything except provide healthy nourishment so why not start now?  I wouldn’t feed a baby pizza and burgers.  I need to hold myself up to the same standard.

I started the new regime Friday night after a particularly “I feel sorry for myself” gluttonous period that lasted a few months.  I’m already feeling better.  It doesn’t take much to start to turn things around.  It’s taking things one day at a time.  And maybe it will pay off.  At least I know if we don’t get pregnant this round it wasn’t because I was having a torrid affair with Jack or Ronnie McD.

Thank you for the comment. It helps to know that I’m not alone in this. I too have been “thinking” about the diet thing, and my RE actually recommended to follow the “eat right for your blood type” diet. Not sure if you’ve heard of it, but I was told that it begins by detoxing you from the inside out. I bought the book, but I haven’t really made the attempt to read the book, much less try anything yet. Good luck to you. Lots of babydust your way

I try to stay away from “diets”. From past experience I’m setting myself up to fail. I find that when I start eating healthy, moderation eventually follows.
