Flu Shot Fever

6 February 2008

I tend to buy into the hype about things like flu shots, vaccines, preventative maintenance and insurance in general.  So it always comes with some surprise when I am debilitated by illness after receiving the aforementioned shot.

It started with a sore throat on Friday, followed by the 101 degree fever which kept me shivering in bed for the entire weekend. The fever didn’t break until Monday morning, and I’m still dealing with the inevitable fallout - the lingering sore throat, the congestion, the general malaise and the racking cough to dislodge the crap leftover in my lungs.

Stupid flu shot.  The really sad part is that I’ll be first in line next year to get it again.  Just in case…

There’s basically no way to know whether we should get flu shots or not. If you get the flu shot and (A) you don’t get sick, then you might not have been exposed to it. If you (B) do get sick, then it might have been a different strain.

If you don’t get a flu shot, then both A and B still hold - might not have been exposed or might have been exposed to a different strain. We can’t test whether it works or not, which bugs me.

You should take a Stats class… That logic sounds vaguely scientific.

Vaguely! Talk about damning with faint praise!
