Rim Job

23 March 2007

My new commute, which is about 90 miles roundtrip, is painful on the pocketbook. By the time I pay $15 in gas and another 4 in bridgetoll I’m looking at a double sawbuck daily. To ease the burden I took a two pronged approach. First, I carpool with my co-worker. He drives one week, I drive the next. The second part of the plan was that I would switch cars with Drew on my week to drive. His Honda Accord V6 gets at least 8-9 miles more a gallon then my 4Runner, and his commute is half that of mine. The savings is about $4 a day so it adds up.

I was pretty happy that he suggested switching cars because I know how much he loves his fancy car. It is replete with all kinds of bells and whistles and heated leather seat goodness that my 1999 4Runner lacks.

It was with a heavy heart that I had to call him yesterday morning to tell him I did a curb check and f*d up one of his front rims. Unfortunately for the Accord the rim is pretty flat and flush with the tire, so pulling up too close to the curb is a disaster waiting to happen. Oh wait…it did happen. The little stunt managed to gouge out some pretty good track marks which are far from buffable.

To his credit Drew took the news very well. Fortunately the damage is on the passenger side so there won’t be a constant reminder of my folly. Either way, I feel pretty bad about the whole thing and am thankful that he did not go out of his way to make me feel worse. He’s a good man.
