Hope
18 December 2006For financial reasons Drew had his varicocele surgery at Kaiser rather then with Dr. Turek, the specialist out at UCSF. At the time it felt like the right decision. Based on the knowledge that semen production takes about 90 days we waited three months post surgery to get retested. The results were worse then before. The overall count was about the same (too low), but the morphology (shape) and motility (speed and direction) had declined significantly. The Kaiser urologist offered no explanation. We resigned ourselves to the idea that IVF would be the only way to have children “naturally”.
After coming to terms with the news I realized that we did not have the numbers from the test at Dr. Turek’s office. It was a simple email request for the analysis results that turned the tide. His response concluded: “And by the way, most semen analysis changes after varicocele surgery occur from 4-10 months after surgery. It is still too early to tell.”
And there it is. Hope.

The same thing is going on with myself I had varicocele surgery 3 months ago, I just got my test back and my sperm count is still low. Thanks to your article I do have hope that it will get better within the next 3 -4 months.
