Day Labor
18 December 2006You know the type. Hanging out in front of 7-11 or Home Depot. Looking at you expectantly if you meet their eyes as you pass. These guys are mostly just looking to make a buck for honest work.
A few months back we stripped and stained the back fence along one side of the yard. The job took so long we were dreading having to do the other side. Fortunately the near constant rain gave us near constant excuses, but with the house listing looming we knew we had to get it done. It was off to Home Depot to stock up on supplies. In the back of my mind I was trying to figure out how to get out of it for one more weekend. After all, we had to write our Christmas cards and get them in the mail by Monday. Surely that was more important…
Then my brilliant husband suggested hiring one of the guys hanging around the parking lot to do the job. A quick conversation later we had Damien and Jose in the car for a bargain rate of $12/hour each. They did a really great job on the fence which netted them each $50 and we got our fence and our Christmas cards done. It was a win-win situation for everyone.

Day laborers are such heroes. They are fearless. They will hop into the back of anyones pick up just by the promise of work and pay.
