Sweat Lodge
4 December 2006It’s not often that I am truly sick. I experience occasional lapses of back pain or general malaise which are compelling enough to take the day off work, but it is rare that I have a text book illness. Of course, it was destined to happen the one weekend we’ve had company stay over this year. My brother made a special trip out to see us and I could barely keep myself out of bed. Thankfully he’s a pretty laid back guy and brought plenty of reading material, but that did little to alleviate my guilt over making him fend for himself. The Nyquil, on the other hand, did wonders. Not having had a drink in about 8 years I have a very low tolerance for alcohol. A straight shot of the cherry elixir put me in my happy place and then off to sleep with a quickness. Sleep was a welcome respite from the fire burning behind my eyes. Unfortunately the drugs didn’t keep me there.
I found myself waking up around midnight last night in the wet spot (and not the “it was worth it” kind). Both the lower and upper sheets were soaked through and clinging to my sweat drenched body. It was all I could do to get a towel out of the linen closet and lay it across the ocean that had become my bed. It didn’t solve the problem with the wet top sheet, but after another shot of Nyquil I was too out of it to care. This morning I downed a packet of TheraFlu on my way out the door to work and hoped for the best. So far so good…and so much for my annual flu shot.

Ames: It really wasn’t a problem — it was just good to get a chance to see you. I hope you feel better soon!
