The Obligatory Beer in a Bag
13 August 2006Driving to get some lunch today we saw a young man carrying a refreshing beverage surreptitiously concealed in a paper bag.
Had he been palming a Dr Pecker or a Peppy surely he would have passed by unnoticed and inconspicuous.

My personal favorite is the always refreshing Caco Calo. The first time I saw this was in a podunk liquor store on the way to “the creek” in Ojai with my Father. He was stocking up on enough beer to get through his weekend with 10 year old me - which as it turns out, is quite a lot of beer.
I remember asking him about it and not quite understanding the point of it. He never found it necessary to hide his beer - even driving out to wherever we were going - so I didn’t understand the necessity of hiding the beer.
We would stop at some point along the river coming down out of the mountains and build a dam to create a swimming hole. When we ran out of stuff to talk about there was always the Dodgers or Rams. I think he was trying to give me a taste of what his childhood was like in the limited time he had with me - which I understand more clearly now than then.
The other thing I understand better now than then is that his drinking had been a problem pretty much my entire life - and certainly longer than I had perspective enough to understand it. The lack of perspective that kept me from understanding the need for a Caco Calo beer wrapper.
